Butterflyfish
Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) are some of the most beautiful fishes in the hobby and can be a challenging but rewarding species for the experienced aquarist. Due to their beautiful colors and patterns and docile personality, many butterfly fish are popular saltwater aquarium fish. Butterflyfish have stunning coloration and are very active swimmers, all while staying relatively small. Some Butterflyfish even help control pests like aiptasia.
There are approximately 129 species of butterfly fish found among tropical reefs around the world but are concentrated in the Indo-Pacific oceanic region. Butterflyfish are among the most common sights on reefs throughout the world, especially at low depth. Butterflyfish are normally rather hardy fish once they get established and have a good food source. Getting some Butterflys to eat can be hard, making them a bad choice for beginners.
Despite being peaceful, these fish should be avoided in a reef tank as they do enjoy eating coral and may even nip at other invertebrates such as tubeworms and sea urchins as well. Butterflyfish reach an adult size of six to eight inches in captivity and a minimum of 75 gallons or larger is needed, with ample hiding places, to successfully maintain some species.
