The Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius xanthozona), also known as Wheeler's Bumblebee Goby, is a small and intriguing freshwater to slightly brackish water fish that is often kept in home aquariums. These gobies are known for their striking appearance and unique behavior. To provide the best care for a Bumblebee Goby in your aquarium, follow this care guide.

Tank Size

A suitable tank size for a group of Bumblebee Gobies is at least 10-20 gallons (approximately 38-75 liters), depending on the number of gobies you wish to keep. These gobies are small but are active swimmers, so larger tanks are preferred.

Water Quality

Maintain stable water parameters, including a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C) and a pH level around 7.0-8.0. Regularly test and adjust ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates to ensure optimal water quality.

Filtration

Use a reliable filtration system, such as a sponge filter or a small power filter, to provide biological and mechanical filtration and ensure water clarity.

Diet

Bumblebee Gobies are primarily carnivorous and feed on small invertebrates and zooplankton. They have a particular liking for live or frozen foods. Offer them a varied diet that includes live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and high-quality micro pellet foods.

Feeding Schedule

These gobies are generally opportunistic feeders. Feed them small portions multiple times a day to mimic their natural feeding behavior.

Tankmates

Bumblebee Gobies are peaceful but can be territorial, particularly when it comes to their chosen burrow. It's best to keep them with other peaceful tankmates of similar size. Avoid housing them with larger, aggressive, or fin-nipping fish.

Substrate and Burrow

Provide a soft substrate such as fine sand to allow Bumblebee Gobies to dig burrows, which they use as hiding places and territory. You can use PVC pipes or small caves as shelter for them.

Brackish Water

Bumblebee Gobies can tolerate slightly brackish water conditions. Gradually acclimate them to brackish water by adding marine salt mix to achieve a specific gravity around 1.005-1.010 for the best results.

Water Flow and Lighting

Maintain gentle water flow and provide subdued lighting, as they come from habitats with slow-moving waters and dense vegetation.

Observation

Regularly monitor your gobies for any signs of stress, disease, or aggression, and take appropriate actions if any issues arise.

Bumblebee Gobies can be an entertaining and visually appealing addition to your freshwater to brackish water aquarium. To ensure their well-being, provide them with proper feeding, water quality, and a suitable environment that allows them to display their natural behaviors, such as burrowing and swimming.
