The Tonga Gold Torch with blue tips aka Euphyllia Torch Coral is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral and in a moderate water flow, these corals look a bit like a torch, which is where they get their common name. The Tonga Gold Torch has short and flowing polyps with single rounded tips which are visible throughout the day and night, hiding its branching skeletal base most of the time.
Euphyllia have been a fixture in reef aquariums seemingly since the hobby began and the Torch Corals is one of the most popular in the reef aquarium hobby, and for good reason, as it is incredibly beautiful. Torch corals can come in some incredible colors such as neon green, deep purple, and the highly desirable golden tip torch.
Provide plenty of room between the Euphyllia Torch Coral and other sessile animals, since at night, its sweeper tentacles can extend up to several inches from its base and sting other coral species. The Torch coral species originates from the Indo-Pacific and the South Pacific regions including Australia, Tonga, Fiji, Philippines, Solomon Islands, the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea all the way to the Southern tip of Japan.
Overall, the Torch Coral is an excellent coral for an intermediate aquarist looking to add some complexity and color into a reef tank.
