The Bird of Paradise Birdsnest is a beautiful choice for a reef tank. Some hobbyist refer to it as a BOP Birdsnest for short and in my opinion, one of the most attractive strain of Seriatopora. It makes a great piece for those looking to keep some SPS, but still want a relatively easy and low maintenance tank. The metallic purple polyps are fluffy in appearance, and deeper within you can see the electric green base through the swaying polyps.

The Bird's Nest coral is a Small Polyp Stony coral (shortened to “SPS” by many aquarium owners) with branches growing in random directions. The thick and dense skeletal structure of branches are covered in tiny polyps, giving the coral a velvety appearance during waking hours. This variety may have slightly thicker branches than other types of birdsnest, but it has a stunning display. This coral is one of the fastest growing SPS corals and does best under bright lighting.

Birdsnest Corals satisfy the majority of their nutritional requirements by means of photosynthetic, symbiotic zooxanthellae algae hosted within its body. While it may not require additional food to maintain its health in the reef aquarium, the Bird of Paradise coral will feed on micro-plankton or foods designed for filter-feeding invertebrates.

Bird's Nest coral will add an elegant, tree-like structures in clusters that can be propagated to many locations in your tank. If there is enough flow, this coral will waterfall down the rockwork. In quieter conditions, it grows in a dense tree shape. Often found in shallow reefs and upper reef slopes at depths between 20 to 115 feet (6-25 m) throughout the range of the genus.

They are found along the expansive east coast of Africa, the Mauritius Islands, Madagascar, the Red Sea, the Cocos Island Ridge, to Australia’s west coast in the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, the northern Australian coast, and the Australian east coast in the Lord Howe Islands.
