The Sexy Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes sp.), is one of the most unusual, gorgeous, and easy-to-care-for kinds of shrimp that you can have in your aquarium. These charming little creatures have become known as Thor amboinensis, commonly known as the squat Shrimp or sexy Shrimp, a species of shrimp found across the Indo-West Pacific and in parts of the Atlantic. It is peaceful towards members of its own species and other tankmates.
This is a very small shrimp that makes a perfect addition to any Nano aquarium. It features a translucent/orange body with scattered white spots. They are reef safe, peaceful, and will readily find a host coral or other organism. The sexy shrimp, like other little shrimps like Periclimenes, protects the hard-to-reach anemone while also appearing to provide a cleaning service, helping to keep the anemone clear of debris. While they prefer sea anemones, sexy shrimp can adapt to live in the polyps of Duncan’s coral, green stars, clove, or mushroom corals.
The Sexy Anemone Shrimp should not be housed in aquariums with predatory fish that might attack these small shrimp. For best care, the Sexy Anemone Shrimp should be kept in small groups and fed a varied diet of plankton and flaked, frozen, and meaty foods. If your sexy shrimp are left hungry for too long, they’ll begin to chew on your corals, causing them to retract their polyps as a defense mechanism.
Interestingly, the Sexy Anemone Shrimp is a relatively fast grower and will molt about once a month. However, most Sexy Anemone Shrimp will grow only to a maximum size of around 1-1/2". Although very hardy, it requires a slow acclimation process to avoid any salinity and/or pH shock. Like other invertebrates, the Sexy Anemone Shrimp cannot tolerate high nitrate or copper levels. To promote proper molting, sufficient iodine levels must be maintained.
